The Monarchs in Ikorodu Division and the Local Government/ LCDAs Chairmen, were on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, held a Town Hall meeting at Ikorodu, aimed at ensuring peaceful coexistence and avoid any act likely to breach the peace in Ikorodu Division.
The Stakeholders meeting attracted the presence of the traditional Rulers, led by the Ayangburen of Ikorodu Kingdom, Oba (Engr.) Kabir Adewale Shotobi, Ranodu of Imota, Oba Mudashiru Ajibade Agoro, Adeboruwa of Igbogbo Kingdom, Oba (Barr.) Semiudeen Orimadegun Kasali, Olubeshe of Ibeshe, Oba Richard Ogunsanya, Eweye of Isiwu, Oba Kayode Raji, Sekumade of Ipakodo, Oba Aremu Sotonwa, Alagura of Agura and Communities Baales.
The Anchorman and Chairman Igbogbo/Bayeku LCDA, Builder Olusesan Mayokun Daini, Chairman Ikorodu Local Government, Hon. Wasiu Adeshina, Chairman Ikorodu North LCDA, Builder Adeola Adebisi Banjo, Chairman Ijede LCDA, Hon. Motunrayo Gbadebo-Alogba, Chairman Imota LCDA, Omo'ba Wasiu Agoro, former Deputy Governor, Prince Abiodun Ogunleye, Member Eight and Ninth Assemblies, Hon. Nurudeen Saka-Solaja, the Commissioner of Police, CP Fayoade Adegoke, Political Leaders, Market Men and Women, Religious Leaders, members of the Community Development Associations, the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Transport Unions, Local Joint Task Force, amongst others were all in attendance.
While addressing the gathering, the Lagos Commissioner of Police, CP Fayoade Adegoke, commended all the community leaders and the people of the Ikorodu Division, for their resilience and support to the government of Lagos State in the past decades.
He said to maintain and build upon the relative peace and security that exist in Ikorodu Division requires tremendous efforts from all and sundry. ”We all regretted that Lagos State which has suffered lost of life's with billion of naira properties destroyed due to ENDSAS protest. Hence, it would be out of place for any youths to protest because of the economic hardship that is a temporary situation.
“We must avoid acts or activities that will bridge the peace in our dear and precious State. I call on all of you to provide the much-needed advice, suggestions and critical questions to guide peace building in our state,” CP Fayoade stated.
The CP further assured the people of Ikorodu that the Police and Military would continue to act within the rules of engagement, and to provide security for people and for people to do business without hindrance.
The former Deputy Governor, Prince Abiodun Ogunleye, who also condemned the planned protest, described the proposed protest as unnecessary and uncalled for, even as he enjoined the youth of Ikorodu Division to pray and seek God’s mercy irrespective of religion, tribe, political or ethnic considerations for peace to reign and cushion the immediate but temporary economic hardship in the land.
The representatives of the youth and ethnic groups also addressed the gathering, noting that some of the issues highlighted by the protestants are political, while others are constitutional matters that can only be addressed through the amendment of the constitution, which is on-going at the National Assembly.
The Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabir Adewale Shotobi, thereafter urged all those planning the protests to have confidence in President Tinubu’s relentless efforts at repositioning the economy, while assuring Nigerians that the challenges will sooner or later come to pass.
The Monarch also appealed to the parents and well-meaning Nigerians to monitor the movement of their children and wards so that they will not be used in causing chaos in the country.
