JIMI BENSON EMPOWERS 30 YOUTHS WITH AGRIBUSINESS SKILLS. ...Says it's aimed to give youths a platform to become employers of labour.
Member, House of Reps., representing Ikorodu federal Constituency and Chairman House Committee on Defence, Hon. Babajimi Adegoke Benson, has empowered 30 youths in different agricultural areas at the Nigerian Army Resettlement Centre, Oshodi, Lagos State. 50 participants were said to be enrolled but only 30 made it to the training venue on the commencement day due to the EndSars protest. Room and board were equally catered for throughout the training.
According to the erudite lawmaker, he said this year's training is the first batch and it'll be a biannual event, noting that his choice for a knowledge- based empowerment programme for youths in Ikorodu Federal Constituency was geared towards making them economic giants.
Benson, who spoke during the presentation of certificates and take off fund to the 30 youth trainees, noted that the training programme which was powered by him and his iCARE Foundation, was a shift from common ways of empowering youths, instead of equipping them with skills in sustainable ventures.
The lawmaker disclosed to MegaXpression News that during his electioneering campaign, he made promises to touch the lives of the people positively by empowering youths and women as well as attracting development projects to the people of Ikorodu federal Constituency.
“I decided to move beyond empowering youths with items that can be sold to knowledge- based empowerment through training, in order to give the trainees a platform to become employers of labour,” Benson said.
He said the 30 youths that made the programme were trained in the areas of snail farming, fishery, grass cutter husbandry, macro propagation of banana, plantain and mush room production, maintaining. “The trainees were empowered with all they required to start their own farms with take off cash", Benson revealed.
He therefore congratulated the graduating trainees and expressed satisfaction with their level of commitments and performance, even as he charged them to put to good use knowledge acquired in the course of the training.
Officials of the Nigerian Army Resettlement Centre, Oshodi, Brigadier General Bwaula, Air Vice Marshall Lar the commandant of the facility and Lieutenant A.G Ayoola, applauded Hon Jimi Benson, saying that the training of the youths in the Cantonment was a wise choice and promised to provide technical support and markets for their products.
"We specializes on two major areas because we don't have enough land. So we maximax the little space we have and specializes majorly on crops and animal production.
"On the crop production, we have green houses where selected foods are being planted and other places where we do normal planting like vegetables, cucumber, tomatoes, okro and peppers. We will commission planting of flowers on Monday by the Commander, in case that some of our youths might have passion for beautification.
"There are also economic trees like pawpaw which can likewise be used for beautification. For the animals section, we have large remnant animal like cattles, sheeps and goats. For the birds we have layers, boilers and turkey, and likewise we have snails, fish and pigs. All these will expose them both in the theory and practical aspect," Lieutenant A.G Ayoola explained while speaking with MegaXpression correspondence.
One of the beneficiaries, Mis Praise Adedoyin, equally thanked Hon. Jimi Benson for the empowerment programme, saying it was the first of its kind and promised not to disappoint him.
The highlight of the event includes the presentation of Certificates with cash by Air Vice Marshall Lar, to the 30 graduands who were empowered to be self independent.
