AROYEWUN LEADS ENVIRONMENTAL OFFENSIVE AS IBLCDA DEMOLISHES ILLEGAL SHANTIES, CLEARS BLOCKED DRAINAGE CHANNELS.
The Administration of Omo'ba Hammed Olalekan Aroyewun in Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA, has intensified its environmental enforcement drive with the demolition of illegal shanties along the Offin/Oreta Road corridor, the arrest of three suspects, and the reopening of blocked drainage channels to mitigate flooding and improve environmental sanitation.
The exercise, carried out on Friday, July 17, 2026, was conducted on the directive of the Executive Chairman, Omo'ba Hammed Olalekan Aroyewun, following reports that the makeshift structures had become hideouts for indiscriminate waste disposal and other activities that obstructed drainage channels within the area.
The operation was led by the council's Department of Environment and Waste Management and monitored by the Chief of Staff, Hon. Wasiu Olowu; the Councillor representing Ward C3, Hon. Saidat Adeoba Odeyemi; and operatives of the Local Joint Task Force, who provided security throughout the exercise.
Speaking during the operation, the Head of Department, Environment and Waste Management, Mr. Adekunle Sunday, said the council had received several complaints from residents over the environmental hazards posed by the illegal structures.
He explained that occupants of the shanties had consistently dumped refuse and debris into nearby drainage channels, causing severe blockages that impeded the free flow of water and heightened the risk of flooding in surrounding communities.
Also speaking, the Supervisor for Environment and Waste Management, Hon. Dauda Oshinlaja, described the demolition as a necessary intervention aimed at restoring environmental order and protecting public health.
According to him, years of indiscriminate refuse disposal had rendered sections of the drainage network ineffective, making immediate government action imperative. He assured residents that the council would sustain regular monitoring of the corridor to prevent future encroachment and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
During the exercise, three individuals allegedly responsible for erecting the illegal structures were apprehended and handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation.
The enforcement team also sealed some shops operating under unsanitary conditions, while several business owners were issued warnings over environmental violations and directed to comply with sanitation standards or face stiffer sanctions.
Residents and commuters who witnessed the exercise commended the council's swift intervention, describing it as a timely effort that would restore cleanliness, improve drainage, and reduce the perennial flooding experienced along the Offin/Oreta Road corridor.
Reaffirming his administration's commitment to the Environmental Sustainability and Optimal Wellness pillars of the GLORY Agenda, Executive Chairman, Omo'ba Hammed Olalekan Aroyewun said the council would continue to take decisive action against illegal structures, environmental abuse, and all activities capable of endangering public health and community well-being.
He added that his administration remains committed to building a cleaner, safer, and more orderly Igbogbo/Baiyeku, assuring residents of Offin, Oreta, and adjoining communities that the reopened drainage channels would significantly improve water flow while the council's zero-tolerance policy against environmental violations remains firmly in force.
