Member, House of Reps., representing Ikorodu federal Constituency and Chairman House Committee on Defence, Hon. Babajimi Adegoke Benson, has empowered 102 youths in different agricultural areas at the Nigerian Army Resettlement Centre, Oshodi, Lagos.
The lawmaker applauded the gesture of the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, by putting smiles on the faces through the gift of one plot of land each for the 102 participants, which was said to be leased for 5 years, revealing that his choice for a knowledge- based empowerment programme for youths in Ikorodu Federal Constituency was geared towards making them economic giants.
Benson, who spoke during the presentation of certificates and take off fund to the 102 trainees, equally thanked the Commandant of Army Resettlement Centre Oshodi, AVM M.A Idris, and his team for the knowledge impacted on Ikorodu youths, noting that the training programme was a shift from common ways of empowering youths, instead of equipping them with skills in sustainable ventures.
The lawmaker also disclosed to MegaXpression Media that during his electioneering campaign, he made promises to touch the lives of the people positively by empowering youths and women as well as attracting development projects to the people of Ikorodu federal Constituency.
“I decided to move beyond empowering youths with items that can be sold to knowledge- based empowerment through training, in order to give the trainees a platform to become employers of labour,” Benson said.
Benson therefore congratulated the graduating trainees and expressed satisfaction with their level of commitments and performance, even as he charged them to put to good use knowledge acquired in the course of the training.
The participants were collectively taught on crop production and horticulture, poultry production, small and large ruminants, rabbit production, fish production, snail production, as well as animal health management and animal nutrition. Also towards the end of the programme, they were loaded into their various area of choice for proficiency.
"The youth were elevated and proved excellent both in theory and practical in agriculture. They are therefore adequately equipped to face the larger society and make positive impact towards national economic development. The graduating youth have fulfilled all the requirements that qualify then for graduation," the Commandant revealed.
Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Ms Ruth Bisola Olusanya, who represented the Executive Governor of Lagos,Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, said It's an honor to be at the wonderful graduation ceremony inside the settlement.
"I am very impress by what is been done by the Nigeria Army Forces. Am surprise that a centre like this exist in Lagos, and I as a lagosian, I never knew this facility existed, so we need to train enough more so that people will know that such exist in Lagos.
"On behalf of Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwoolu, as a lagosian and those working in the sit of the government we promise to support you and under the Ministry of Agriculture, we will make available for each and everyone of you a minimum of one plot of land and must make use of it," Ms Olusanya said.
"Under this administration, we are not giving the plot of land for people to sit on it or use it for another purpose, aside from agriculture. We are trying to produce youths that are agricultural orientated and we'll be providing facilities that will be needed.
"The land will be made available for a period of five years and at the end of each year, we'll come back to check the facilities made available if you must have make good use of it. I also believe other training will be done for people so if you don't make use of the land appropriately, it will be giving to another person," the Commissioner explained.
