The Chairman, Igbogbo/Bayeku LCDA, Bldr. Olusesan Daini has pallied the Humanitarian Voluntary Association for Community Development, HUVACOD, on security awareness programme. An interactive session with public commentator who gave insight on the topic: "Nigeria and the fight against insecurity; The role of the citizens".
The maiden programme which held at Adeboruwa Palace Igbogbo, was facilitated by Kadri Adeleke, Coordinator HUVACOD Ikorodu Division, embraced by the Chairman, Igbogbo/Bayeku LCDA, Bldr. Olusesan Daini and HRM Oba AbdulSemiu Orimadegun Kasali, Adeboruwa of Igbogbo Kingdom. "It is aimed to sensitized the youths of Ikorodu Division on security challenges and way forward", Adeleke said.
In his welcome address, Chairman Daini Olusesan said Nigeria as a nation has been going through great challenges in the recent times owing to the unpatriotic activities of some faceless elements that derive joy in inflicting pains on the entire citizenry by causing them to live in fear due to insecurity.
As a government, Daini revealed that the Lagos State government is not leaving any stone unturned to ensure residents lives under a peaceful atmosphere. "Security of lives and properties can only be guaranteed through collective efforts of all Lagosians," he said.
Also, in his eloquent speech, the quest speaker, Mr Christogonus Ibe, Executive Director and founder, African Youths Initiative on Crime Prevention, said It's an indisputable fact that crime rate is on the increase in Nigeria today. "A critical appraisal of those that perpetuate criminal acts will show that youths form the bulk and among these youths are unemployed graduates but a substantial number of this group are undergraduates from different institutions of learning both secondary and tertiary across the federation.
"Today, our educational institutions and communities are held hostage by different groups of Criminals, Herdsmen, Cultists and Terrorists who are also already-made instrument to perpetuate crime either as political thugs, kidnapers or even as assassins and suicide bombers.
"Dealing with today's threats and Crime Prevention challenges requires broad, deep and substantial global cooperation especially citizens; Thus the states of the nation must created a collective security system to prevent terrorists, strengthen nonproliferation of arms, and bring peace to violence torn areas, while also promoting Community Policing, Human Right, Democracy and Development.
"It is against this backdrop that the idea to present this paper emanates from as we realized that our country has not been able to manage successfully the issue of security through citizens' partnership", Ibe explained.
Ibe further stated that the only solution for insecurity challenges in Nigeria is for Nigerian citizens to play their parts in a way of supporting government and security agencies in intelligence gathering within their communities.
Another point he raised is for the government to govern in a way that fosters development. "Development in this context consists of creating an economy with relevant social, economic and physical infrastructure for business operations and industrial growth, to provide gainful employment, functional and useful education, and quality health care for the people. Furthermore, there is the need for governments to ensure that rising poverty indices are reversed to ensure that the Nigeria meet their basic needs," he added.
