A senior lecturer in the department of Political Science, Lagos State University, (LASU), Ojo, Lagos, Dr. Surajudeen Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, recently at the 2-day iCARE lecture series, organised by Hon. Babajimi Adekoge Benson, MHR, engaged hundreds of youths across Ikorodu federal Constituency, where he spoke on ‘Leaders in Politics’.

According to him, “successful leaders are those who have demonstrated their ability to move their society tangibly in the direction that seemed clearly supportive of their suggested 'grand design'. While unsuccessful leaders are those whose efforts to move their society in the direction of their choosing which have backfired or brought about results clearly destructive of their propagated vision."

Dr. Fatai-Abatan, while narrating this, also stated that leadership is often defined by socio-cultural factors existing within the environment that the leader is going to operate in. He therefore explained that the pattern of political leadership, requires analyse of the belief, values, characters, power relations, and ethical/ unethical values, attitudes and actions of leaders and followers.

"There are skills that are peculiar to good leadership in terms of development and terms of innovation, good leader intensify the vision of the society. Leadership is a process in which an individual motivate and act in a way, it is a dynamic process and also identify the needs of the society," he said.

Adding that leadership is not about somebody just leading, rather, “it is a dynamic process which has to do with the ability to motivate your followers; ability to give them direction; inspire them and give them the pathway”.

Dr. Fatai-Abatan therefore applauded Hon. Babajimi Benson for being a transformation leader, who is sensitive to the demands and yearnings of his people, their needs and aspirations, saying as a leader, Hon. Benson is charting the course of mobilizing the people of Ikorodu federal Constituency for common good and development.

Dr. Fatai-Abatan appealed for continuous engagement and integration as ways out of Nigeria’s leadership and governance problems, adding that the iCARE lecture series have started the process which must be sustained.

“To reconstruct leadership is to employ the conceptual framework of “Leadership Reality-self Check and Performance oriented Reality Index”, he added.
