The Executive Chairman, Amuwo-Odofin Local Government, Prince Olanrewaju Sanusi, popularly known as P.L.S, has commenced the removal of shops and shanties built on Second Avenue road and setbacks in Amuwo-Odofin Local Government. The exercise was said to aim at creating easy link roads for vehicular movement to decongest traffic situations in the area.
Speaking with Shakiru Seidu of MegaXpression Media, The Chairman said the removal exercise is long overdue for the Local Government to open up access roads and streets within the Amuwo-Odofin for easy vehicular movement.
P.L.S, further disclosed that the removal of shanties and illegal shops built on the 'Second Avenue road' is a continuous exercise, and will be extended to other parts of the Local Government in line with the mega city status, as envisaged by the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Olushola Sanwo-Olu.
In his words “Shanties and makeshift shops have no place in the agenda of Mr. Governor and therefore, are not allowed anymore on our roads, as the government has provided designated markets, shops and outlets for traders to do their business, instead of coming onto the roads. All corridors leading to commercial and residential high rise buildings across the Festac Town have to be cleared to allow free flow of vehicles. The glory of Festac 77, when the Estate was rated as the best in West Africa, must be brought back,” the Chairman insisted.
Sanusi further disclosed that his government would be fully committed to the total regeneration and renewal of urban areas to meet the mega status of Lagos State. “It is very unfortunate that traders and shop owners have taken over major roads and streets blocking easy movement of vehicles on our major roads, we cannot fold our alms and allow this ugly situation go unchecked,
“The Amuwo-Odofin Local Government, in collaboration with the Lagos State government are taking the bull by the horns by removing all shops and shanties impeding the free flow of vehicular movement within these axes," P.L.S added.
He further noted that several warnings earlier given by the Council to owners of shanties erected on streets and roads have not been obeyed, he advice them to take advantage of the grace period given to remove their wares instead of flying the ethnic kites that only business interest of some ethnic group is being targeted, as government is resolute this time to ensure that shops and shanties on the roads and street are remove and sanity return to Amuwo-Odofin Local Government.
"We will engage the uniform men as Security guards on the 'Second Avenue road' and other major roads in Festac Town, pay them monthly, while the business owners on the roads would be re- embossing the Council. This will help us on security measures and safer environment," Sanusi added.
Also taking part in the exercise on Tuesday, are different Government Agencies, which include KAI, LAWMA, VIO, LASMA, Health Officers, and Nigeria Police. Other Local Government Staff in attendance includes the Council Manager, Mr Kunle Bakare, Council Engineer, Mr Segun Orelesi, the Council Treasurer, Information unit, the Seven Councillors, led by the Legislative Leader, amongst others.
