5TH OBA KABIR SHOTOBI INDEPENDENCE DAY MINI MARATHON ENDS IN GRAND STYLE, AS IFEANYI ALLOY, MS AKANNBI WIN THE MALE AND FEMALE CATEGORIES. You’re lifting Ikorodu beyond what we expected, Sen. Adeseye Ogunlewe tells the initiator, Hon S.O.B. Agunbiade.
It was a Standstill on the major streets of Ikorodu on Tuesday, October 1, 2019, when over four hundred participants took part in the 5th edition of Oba Kabir Adewale Shotobi Mini Marathon. The Race which covered a distance of 10km, started from the Palace of the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, HRM Oba Kabir Adewale Shotobi, and ended at the Police Barracks Igbogbo. It was a healthy competitive race that earns the young participants a tremendous applauds from Monarchs and other notable dignitaries.
The event which was officially began with an opening prayer by the Agbaakin of Ikorodu Kingdom, Otunba (Sir) Ayodele Elesho, saw in the Male category of the race, Ifeanyi Alloy of Imota High School, Oluwatuyi Michael of Yewa Grammar School and Sekoni Olawale of Goodness and Mercy privste School, clinched the 1st, 2nd and 3rd position respectively. While the female category, Miss Akanbi of Luwasa Senior Grammar School claimed the first position, Bashir Awawa of United High School Ikorodu and Wahab Zainab, came 2nd and 3rd respectively.
The 4th to 20th positions of both male and female were given consolation Bags with additional N10,000 each for the 1st to 10th positions. 10 years old, Musa Ifeoluwa and Ifeoluwa Akeredola were both celebrated as the youngest athletes of the 2019 tournament.
The Chairman of the planning committee, Mr. Akeem Bello, in his eloquent address, appreciated the participants of the Mini Marathon race. He said the event was created to domicile independence day celebration in Ikorodu Division.
Bello also revealed that over the past four editions, the race has not being in line with the International Association of Athletes (IAA) while the Lagos State Sports Commission has given instruction that the ages of the athletes must be between 11 and 16 years.
"Over 700 students from various schools in Ikorodu Division applied for the race this year, but only 449 were selected and others dropped because of age limit and health wise, which also affected the current champion Esther Affigbo, who had to stay out because she exceeded the age limits," he said.
In his keynote address, the Majority Leader, Lagos State House of Assembly and Opomulero of Ikorodu Kingdom, Hon S.O.B Agunbiade, who's also the initiator and sponsor of Oba Kabir Shotobi mini marathon, payed homage to the royal heads and other prominent personalities in attendance. He lauded the organizers, security agencies and medical teams for a job well done.
“Like I said during the unveiling of this programme, I said it’s aimed to create healthy rivalry among private and secondary schools and to contribute to the development of sports in Ikorodu Division and more so, to immortalize our dear king, HRM Oba (Engr) Kabir Shotobi, for his leadership quality towards the development of our Division,” he said. Agunbiade further ascertained that the sixth edition would be much more better.
His Royal Majesty, Oba Kabir Adewale Shotobi, in his royal remarks, thanked the erudite Legislator, Hon. S.O.B Agunbiade, labeled him the best Majority Leader in the whole of South West and in Nigeria. He also applauded the participants, while urging and encouraging them not to lose trend on their education.
The Tutor General and Permanent Secretary Education District II, Mrs. Anike Adekanye praised and commended Hon S.O.B Agunbiade for a job well done. She further pleaded with the athletes not to lose focus but study hard.
Others notanke personalities in attendance are His royal majesty Oba Richard Ogunsanya, Olubeshe of Ibeshe, Hon Nurudeen Saka-Solaja of Ikorodu Constituency 2, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe, Alhaji Fatiu Salisu of Ijede LCDA, Hon Abubakir, Primate Chalse Odugbesi, Comrade Kehinde Okeowo, the Oba Elect of Emuren, Mr. Alowonle, Princess Sammy Bada, Alhaji Akeem Olukunga, S.O.B Team, among others.
