History was again repeated itself at the Ayangburen Palace, Ikorodu, when His Royal Majesty, Alaiyeluwa Oba Babatunde Adewale Ajayi, Torungbuwa II, Akarigbo of Remo land, visited the ancient Ikorodu town on Tuesday, June 18, 2019. The visitation said to have marked the end of the age-long unfriendly relationship between the two cities.
His Royal Majesty, Oba (Engr) Kabiru Adewale Shotobi, Adegorushen V, Ayangburen of Ikorodu, had moved to rewrite history and imprint his name on the sands of time by receiving the Akarigbo of Remo land at his multi million naira Royal Castle, Ikorodu.
Many Royal Heads from Remo land accompanied Akarigbo of Remo land. The mood at the Ayangburen Palace was that of disbelief, and then celebration, as the people were agog at seeing the two royalties seated together.
Shagamu Monarch arrived at the garage roundabout, Ikorodu to the warm embrace of the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, who welcomed him as the congregation watched in awe and expressed admiration for the historic reunion. MegaXpression Community Magazine learnt that the last Akarigbo that visited Ikorodu was Oba Adedoyin in 1939, during the reign of Oba Adenaike Alagbe.
Speaking on the visit, Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Shotobi said it was the first by any Ikorodu monarch since 1939, with smile spread across his face, he said, “May your reign be long, Akarigbo. I am happy with your move to reunite Ikorodu and Shagamu, this kind of visit was in 1939. Today, history is made with the visit of Akarigbo of Remo land to Ikorodu and we feel delighted to host you and to reassure you that we will be ready to work with you."
On his part, Oba Babatunde Ajayi said he recognised the place of Ikorodu monarch in the Remo history, adding that a new dawn had fallen on Remo Monarchs and the people. “It is a new dawn for all Remo sons and daughters around the globe. Ebi l’a o mase…Awa o ba ti ja wa ooo, Ebi l’a o ma se (We are relatives and not enemies), he said.
"I am here today and ready to damn any insinuations from anywhere; my mission here is to resuscitate the mutual relationship between Shagamu and Ikorodu, both home and abroad and I am ready to work with the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabiru Adewale Shotobi, to project the unity and love which we believe is existing in the days of our forefathers,” Akarigbo said.
He therefore presented the former Deputy, Vice and President of Shagamu Economic Summit, a Publisher and Administrator per excellence, Otunba Yinka Lawal Sholarin to Ayangburen of Ikorodu, who was chosen and will later be installed formally as "Basorun-Oga" of Ikorodu. Sholarin was agreed to serve as an Ambassador to uphold the peaceful and mutual coexistence among the two cities.
Ikorodu, which was said to be a farm settlement of Ogarenmade, son of Oyelumade popularly known as Koyelu, the fifth Akarigbo of Remo land. According to history, Oyelumade had eight children namely: Ogarenmade, Lasunwon, Sekumade, Adeolapo, Osonusi Adetuge Ogbonyari, Anoko, Adegorushen and Oguntade.
Six of the children said to have settled at Ikorodu, while Sekumade settled at Ipakodo. Adeolapo settled at Owutu but unfortunately, he left no issue. Ogbonyari and Anoko settled at Gberigbe Ewu Owa. After the death of seventh Akarigbo, Torungbuwa 1, it was revealed that Ifa Oracle advised that the next Akarigbo should come from Ikorodu. However, the Ogbeni Odi came and took Anoko to become the 8th Akarigbo of Remo land.
Adegorushen and Oguntade was said to have stayed at Shagamu to become the two branches of Koyelu Ruling House today. Ogarenmade popularly known as "Oga" and Lasunwon, his junior brother of the same mother journeyed together from Orile Offin and established Eyin Ogbe. They started farming, hunting and Lambo, who was a teenager and not married got drawn. This was said to be the reason why Akarigbo Koyelu visited River Ubere and took three major decessions.
Speaking again with MegaXpression Community Magazine, one of the children of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Dr. Otunba Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu, lauded the reunion of the foremost traditional rulers.The woman of substance said the visit by the Akarigbo to Ikorodu gladdened the heart of all Remo people at home and in the Diaspora.
The Agbaakin of Ikorodu, Otunba (Sir) Ayodele Elesho said with the historic visit of Akarigbo to Ikorodu, Oba Babatunde Ajayi has set the ball rolling for the peaceful coming together of all the lost sons and daughters of Remo. “Irrespective of how anybody will like to see it, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, has set the ball rolling for the peaceful coming together of all the lost sons and daughters of Remo," he said.
The visitation which was enriched with different traditional display, i.e., Igunnugo, Obaluwaye, Meboyi from Itunmoja and Awo-Opa group, had the presence of His Royal Majesty, Alaiyeluwa Oba Adewale Osiberu, Elepe of Epe Shagamu, His Royal Highnesses, Oba Bashir Aremu Sotonwa, Sekumade of Ipakodo, Oba Kazeem Olanipekun Gbadamoshi, Ologijo of Ogijo, Oba Timothy Akinsanya, Ewusi of Makun Shagamu, Oba M.S. Lasisi, Odofin of Sanyinde Shagamu, Oba Mukaila Akanji Olabinjo, Eleposo of Eposo Remo, Oba Mufutau Adeoye Sanni, Aminisan of Oko Shagamu, Oba Taiwo Adebimpe Oyekanmi, Ayanmeruna of Sotubo Shagamu, Oba Moshood Owodina Adeniran, Oniraye of Iraye and Oba Jamiu Olalekan, Onigode of Igode kingdom.
