WE MUST URGENTLY CURB DRUG ABUSE IN OUR SOCIETY, HON. SHOLAJA-SAKA CHARGES CONSTITUENTS AT STAKEHOLDERS MEETING. ...Royal Heads, Council Chairmen, Community Leaders, Others, seek collaboration against increasing trend.
Hon. Nurudeen Sholaja-Saka, Member, Lagos State House of Assembly, Representing Ikorodu Constituency II.
Member Lagos State House of Assembly, representing Ikorodu Constituency II, Hon. Nurudeen Sholaja-Saka, on Thursday decried the increasing rate of drug abuse among youths in Nigeria.
Sholaja-Saka, who's equally the Chairman, House Committee on PAC, spoke at the 7th Annual Constituency Stakeholders' Meeting, at Prestige Event Centre, Ibeshe, in Igbogbo/Bayeku LCDA, warned that this menace must be urgently checked to prevent its devastating effects on the growth and progress of Nigeria.
According to Sholaja-Saka, the Lagos State House of Assembly has been at the forefront of the fight against drug abuse through various legislations. "At the Lagos State House of Assembly, the leadership and members of the House have always taken matters affecting residents and especially the youths very passionately.
"We have continued to be proactive in the consideration of viable laws and policies that would enhance youth potentials and development. Some of the recent laws that are passed attest to government's efforts on this matter and these include the law to amend the Lagos State Sports Commission of 2015, to promote youth and Sports development in Lagos and for connected purposes.
"The law will ensure that youths are provided with great opportunities not only in the area of recreation but where they can nurture, explore and utilise their potentials in sporting activities to become professional sportsmen and women. This would also take the minds of many of them off drug abuse and criminal activities," the lawmaker said.
Sholaja-Saka listed other youth-oriented bills considered by the House to include two recent ones for the establishment of a university of education and another for the establishment of a university of science and technology, which aims to address the inadequacies in Polytechnic education system in Nigeria.
"While the passage of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps is aimed at ensuring the safety of all in our neighbourhood, the prevalence of drug abuse amongst adults and youths, if not effectively addressed and curbed, will jeopardise the entire efforts of the House in the establishment of a safe, peaceful, and livable society.
"Consequently, we call on all Stakeholders, residents, parents, teachers, students, school proprietors, religious organisations, celebrities, social media influencers, professional bodies, the academia, civil society organisations and community leaders to work in concert with the government for the common good of our society by saying 'no to drug abuse trafficking'," Hon. Sholaja-Saka concluded.
Earlier, the Chairman, Igbogbo/Bayeku LCDA, Builder Olusesan Mayokun Daini, in his welcome address expressed the readiness of his administration to collaborate with Lagos State House of Assembly to curb the increasing trend of drug abuse by the youths and adults in the local government area.
The Council Chairman, while noting the negative effects of drug abuse on the youths and national development, stated that that the local government which is closer to the grassroots must synergize with Lagos State House Assembly to nip the ugly situation in the bud.
Daini therefore promised to work hand in hand with the lawmaker representing Ikorodu Constituency II, Hon. Nurudeen Sholaja-Saka to change the ugly narratives as well as bringing more infrastructural development to the LCDA.
Also, a former SSG and Member, Governor's Advisory Council, (G.A.C), Asiwaju Olorunfunmi Basorun, said in his eloquent remarks that the law enforcement agencies should continue with the act of parading criminals to reduce the menace, and serve as detrum to those who may want to commit such crimes.
"I want the governmennt to look into it again, it is not in the interest of the general public, particularly in Nigeria where crime means nothing to many people. We affirm with our own local experience that when these criminals are paraded, it's affects those who want to commit crimes," Basorun added.
The NDLEA Boss, who was ably represented by Mr Danni Oluwaranti, submitted their presentation with the words of giving no room for drug abuse in our society.
Community leaders, who spoke at the event, therefore commended Hon. Sholaja-Saka for his quality representation. They emphasised the need to effectively curb drug abuse with the Royal Fathers promising to carry the campaign to their Palaces.
