A political pressure group, APC Amazons, has lobbied the former SSG Lagos State and Member of the Governor's Advisory Council, G.A.C, Asiwaju Olorunfunmi Basorun, to support the APC Amazons' advocacy for more political inclusions for the women folks in governance across Ikorodu Division, MegaXpression Media was there.
Led by the Director General of iCARE Foundation, Mayor Muyideen Sanwoola, on Friday in Igbogbo, Lagos, the Coordinator stated that the group is dedicated to creating a society where women’s participation and their ability to fulfil their potential are unrestricted, acknowledging the supports giving so far by Asiwaju Basorun, other party leaders, and Hon. Babajimi Adegoke Benson, MHR, particularly in the recently concluded Local Government Elections.
In his address to the Apex leader, Sanwoola said to Basorun that the APC Amazons' task, among others is to assist and prepare Women in APC Ikorodu Division for political positions and most importantly on how to win Elections.
"APC Amazon is a women pressure group that was formed in Ikorodu to prepare and train Women who are aspiring for Political Positions. Members where brought onboard based on the criteria that they are running for political Offices.
"22 members started the group with an interest in running for political offices, while 10 people got elected. These include one Council Chairman, one Vice Chairman, two Leaders of legislative Arm, three Deputy Leaders, one Majority Leader and one Chief Whip," Sanwoola explained.
He further emphasized that based on statistics, women don't usually vote for themselves but will rather vote for men, noting that Ikorodu Division, being a pacesetter, Basorun and other party leaders have helped Ikorodu to achieve what has set the Division aside from others in Nigeria.
"Presently, Ikorodu Division has been put in the lifeline and that is what we want to start doing now. Once we put the data out now, everybody will start seeing what has been achieved for the politics in Nigeria from Ikorodu and understand that Ikorodu Division has set in a whole lot of things.
"We set out the journey by calling every women that is aspiring for political positions in Ikorodu to join the group regardless of the group you belong to. This is a journey that has to embarked upon for the common goals of the women folds in Ikorodu. We also need a leader that will actualise the dream, and I told you that the group will need a Patron which you galdly accepted and we will be willing to help them in terms of political knowledge before and after the election processes," Sanwoola stated, while addressing Asiwaju Olorunfunmi Basorun.
"Alot of politicians out there are aware that Ikorodu did well but they did not know how well Ikorodu did and we also realized that going for Supervisory Councillors and other executive appointments will be out there. We are also counting on you and other party leaders to help us influence that some of the females here that have not gotten a position will be able to get positions," he urged.
"This also wouldn't have been possible without the endorsement and efforts of Rep. Babajimi Benson, MHR, and he agreed to help us in our endeavor to make sure whatever we do become successful, Sanwoola revealed.
In his eloquent remarks, the APC Apex leader and members of G.A.C, Asiwaju Olorunfunmi Basorun, applauded the zeal and determination of the APC Amazons, saying women need to know the reasons why they're in politics before many other services follows.
"I didn't start as a politician, I started with community services. In the 50's and early 60's, I lobbied many groups to make me the Secretary, and I eventually because Secretary to about eight or nine organization as a small boy.
"In 1963, the community who were using me insisted that I should put my eye into politics. You must be focused because irrespective of your position, you are representing the entire system. Whatever you can contribute in your subcell will make it successful, so make sure the small position you are occupying turns to a big one by your performance.
"There would be disturbance during the task but be determined, focused and be willing in performing your responsibility. Likewise, you need to work hard particularly whatever method to retain your sit," Basorun said, while addressing the APC Amazons.
"I want to agreed and be thankful for this gesture because we are in the service together, let us maintain this position and anything that is good, we have to fight for it. If the leaders are good and the entire Division is succeeding, it is because you followers are also good and we should give you that credit, and you have to continue to be good because that is what will enhance you to move forward," he added.
Basorun further assured that he will continue to ensure that women are not relegated. "We shall always support you and when we give you the opportunity, make sure you do us proud when you get there. Do your job according to the rule laid down for the exercise," Basorun concluded.
The Chairman, Ijede LCDA, Hon. Mrs Moturayo Gbadebo-Alogba and the Vice Chairman, Ikorodu LG, Princess Folashade Olabanji-Oba, equally thanked and appreciated Asiwaju Basorun for his leadership role so far in Ikorodu Division, and for agreeing to become the Patron of APC Amazons, while promising to make him proud, MegaXpression Media reports.
