The Class 2003 of Ikorodu High School, Ikorodu, Lagos, on Wednesday donated generously, 20 sets of 3-seater chairs, desks, and a marker board to the Junior Secondary School section of Ikorodu High School. The donation, made by the Alumni Association 1997/2003 set, also included repairs of classroom ceilings and flooring.
This was said to have being in poor condition, with broken floors, damaged ceilings, and lack of proper seating, making students to sit on the floor during classes.
Sulaimon Mojeed-Sanni, the President, Alumni Association of the School, highlighted the need to give back to their alma mater and expressed disappointment over the poor learning environment students were subjected to.
“Today, we gather here as proud alumni of Ikorodu High School, bound by a commitment to give back to the school that helped shape us. It’s a bittersweet occasion—while we’re excited to make a difference, it’s disheartening that our return is driven by the difficult conditions facing the students of our alma mater.
“For too long, these young students have been forced to sit on bricks, wrappers, and even the bare floor to take classes right here in Ikorodu, in the heart of Lagos, a city hailed as the economic nerve centre of Nigeria. It’s inconceivable that, in the 21st century, children in a city with an annual budget of over 2 trillion naira and revenue generation of over 800 billion naira are learning in such degrading conditions,” she stated
She emphasized that the Ikorodu High School Alumni Association, Class of 2003, felt compelled to act as they couldn’t stand by knowing that children as young as those in Junior Secondary School are forced to endure such harsh conditions.
She stated the association’s donations were funded entirely by members’ contributions, with members sacrificing despite the economic challenges to support the school.
The president also used the opportunity to thank his executive council, including Modupe Isaac-Solate, Kehinde Badmus, Bose Ilesanmi, Fehintoluwa Ajayi, and Atinuke Samuel, for their dedication.
In addition, Atinuke Samuel, the General Secretary of the association, encouraged the students to maintain the donated desks and newly repaired ceiling to encourage further support.
Mrs. Sanni, the junior school principal and also the home economics teacher during the alumni’s time as students, expressed her gratitude, saying, “I want to appreciate each one of you. Despite the situation in the country, you still give back to your alma mater. Kudos to all of you.”
This donation is not the first gesture from the alumni group. Three years ago, the same alumni set donated a generator to the senior section of Ikorodu High School.
Others in attendance were Ajayi Fehintoluwa, the Public Relations Officer of the association, Kehinde Badmus, the treasurer, and other members of the alumni association.
