In a landmark decision, the leadership of Igbogbo/Baiyeku Local Council Development Area (LCDA), in conjunction with the Lagos State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs who was represented by Mr. James Kakawa, and key traditional institutions, unanimously adopted Mrs. Mojisola Oyesanya as the Acting Iya-Oloja General of the LCDA. The resolution comes in the wake of the demise of Chief Mrs. Rachel Asabi Obayomi, the former Iya-Oloja General, earlier this year.
Mr. James Kakawa, Director of Lagos State Market Development and Secretary to the Lagos State Market Advisory Board under the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, provided critical insights, guidelines and procedure as stated in relevant laws of the state and constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria as the responsibility of the Local Government into the transition process.
Kakawa explained that under the existing guidelines, the Deputy Iya-Oloja General is expected to assume the role of Acting Iya-Oloja General when the position becomes vacant due to the death of the incumbent. This interim leadership allows the executive of the Market Association sufficient time to deliberate and propose a new candidate to the LCDA for a substantive position.
“Constitutionally, the Market Association is an extension of the Local Government/Local Council Development Area, and before a new Iya-Oloja emerge, the Executive body of the Market Association will meet to decide on a new Iya-Oloja General who must a prominent member of the association and a regular attendee of the Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA Market Advisory Council among other criterias,” Mr. Kakawa said. “Once their decision is made, the proposal is forwarded to the LCDA, which reviews the parameters of their choice. The LCDA also considers input from traditional institutions, whose interest in the process is channeled through the council’s leadership, as they hold the final decision to approve the appointment.”
Mrs. Mojisola Oyebola’s appointment is regarded as a stabilizing move for the market community in Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA. As Acting Iya-Oloja General, she is expected to oversee market affairs, maintain order, and ensure that the values of inclusivity and economic growth are upheld during her tenure.
The late Chief Mrs. Rachel Asabi Obayomi, a respected matriarch, left behind a legacy of service and development in the LCDA’s market sector.
The meeting, held at the Council Secretariat, saw the participation of the Executive Chairman, Builder Olusesan Daini, Vice-Chairman, Legislative arm of Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA, Management staff, Supervisors, and representatives from the Olubeshe of Ibeshe Kingdom, the Fidmolu of Elepe Kingdom, officers from the Department of State Services in Lagos state, and the Nigerian Police Force Ikorodu Division alongside other stakeholders.
This development underscores the importance of collaboration between governmental bodies, traditional institutions, and community leaders in fostering sustainable governance and growth in Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA.
