No fewer than 60 widows benefited from the N50,000 cash gift, 10kg of rice and 10kg of garri per person, from the Majority Leader, Lagos State House of Assembly, representing Ikorodu constituency 1, Hon. Sanai Oyeniran Bolanle Agunbiade.
The donation, he said was part of his gesture to better the lot of the less privileged and put smiles on the faces of the widows, noting that he was only planning to commemorate his birthday with the programme before the urgly attack on his house.
The erudite lawmaker recalled that at the peak of the pandemic, he had personally distributed palliatives to his constituents more than three times, noting that the attack was sponsored.
“For my birthday on 25th October 2020, I have sent out, through my Media Team, notice of my intention to give support to 50 widows and also distribute to some vulnerable and indigent individuals across the three local councils of my constituency.
“The barbaric event is though shocking but like a dolphin which is happy even in the middle of giant waves and horrible storm, I am stable and my faith in the mercy and grace of God is very fat.
"For certain, the looters are not Endsars protesters because the youth in Ikorodu engaged in very peaceful and well coordinated protest. The perpetrators of the attack on my house are group of assailants on a mission targeted at my life," the lawmaker explained.
Agunbiade regretted that his certificates, travelling passports of his family and other valuables were stolen. He lamented his wardrobe and that of the wife were ransacked. He however, expressed gratitude to God that no life was lost during the incident.
Reacting to MegaXpression brief interview, Agunbiade reassured the people of Ikorodu constituency 1, of his dedication to the cause for which he was elected as their representative, adding that he will continue to reach out to different sections of the society at all time.
The beneficiaries could not hide their joy at the kind gesture of Hon Agunbiade. Speaking with MegaXpression correspondence at the occasion, the coordinator of the Widows' Association in Ikorodu, Mrs Bridget Ugeuge, expressed profound gratitude to the lawmaker and admonished him to continue the good work he has been doing.
She said women have been monitoring the good work of the lawmaker and his dedication to the cause of uplifting living standard of the people of his constituency.
Earlier, the APC Vice Chairman, Lagos East Senatorial District, Asipa Kaoli Olatunji Olusanya, in his remarks, saluted Agunbiade's courage for the widows, needy and vulnerable people in Ikorodu, regardless of the situation he found himself during the attack of his residence.
"When someone has a determination, the will to do it, it shows that it is possible to bring something out of the little you have. Sixty widows are given a token of fifty thousand naira each along side with rice and garri, but if only about fifty percent of the beneficiaries can use the money productively, I think it will heed good result because not all of them will put it to productive use," Kaoli said.
Kaoli urged residents of Ikorodu to embrace peaceful coexistence, changing youth to desist from destroying or vandalizing any government properties.
