The Executive Chairman of Igbogbo/Bayeku LCDA, Omo’ba Hammed Olalekan Aroyewun, has assured pensioners in the council area of his administration’s commitment to ensuring that their concerns receive the necessary attention, as he received members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) during their one-day warning protest over outstanding pension arrears and other entitlements.
The pensioners, who joined their counterparts across Lagos State in the protest on Monday, August 24, 2026, expressed deep concern over what they described as prolonged delays in the payment of various pension arrears, consequential adjustments, wage awards and other benefits due to retirees.
Although Aroyewun was away in Abuja on an official assignment, he ensured that the protesting senior citizens were warmly received at the council secretariat. He was represented by the Council Manager, Mr. Babatunde Afolabi, alongside other members of the Chairman’s Cabinet.
Speaking on behalf of the Chairman, Afolabi conveyed Aroyewun’s message of solidarity and assurance to the pensioners, stressing that the administration recognised their contributions to the development of Lagos State and would not treat their concerns with levity.
Aroyewun, through his representative, acknowledged that pensioners deserved dignity, respect and a comfortable life after years of dedicated service to the state and the nation.
He assured the protesters that their grievances would be properly documented and communicated through the appropriate channels, while urging them to remain peaceful and constructive in their engagement with government.
The Chairman further emphasised that the present administration in Igbogbo/Bayeku LCDA was a government of inclusion and open engagement, assuring the pensioners that their voices mattered and that the council would continue to provide a listening ear to issues affecting residents, particularly senior citizens.
He said the council would continue to explore every legitimate avenue within its powers to ensure that matters affecting pensioners in Igbogbo/Bayeku received the attention they deserved.
Earlier, the Chairman, Lagos State Council of the NUP, Comrade Olufemi Olarewaju, in his address, lamented the hardship being experienced by pensioners across the state.
Olarewaju listed several outstanding entitlements being demanded by pensioners under both the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS) and Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), including pension arrears, consequential adjustments, pension reviews and wage awards.
He said many retirees had been subjected to severe economic hardship after spending decades serving the state and the nation, appealing to the Lagos State Government to urgently address their demands.
The protest coordinator in Igbogbo/ Bayeku LCDA, Madam Bisi Bello Mustapha, also commended the Aroyewun-led administration for the manner in which the pensioners were received.
Mustapha described Aroyewun as a responsive and people-oriented Chairman who had demonstrated respect for senior citizens and maintained an administration that was accessible to the people.
She particularly appreciated the Chairman for ensuring that, despite his absence from the council due to an official assignment in Abuja, his representatives were available to receive and listen to the pensioners.
According to her, the gesture demonstrated that Aroyewun’s administration was committed to dialogue and would not shut its doors against citizens seeking to express legitimate concerns.
The pensioners expressed appreciation for the warm reception, stressing that their protest was not intended to create conflict but to draw government’s attention to the difficult conditions confronting retired workers.
The demonstration is part of the wider agitation by Lagos State pensioners, who have warned of a larger protest scheduled for August 31, 2026, if their outstanding demands are not satisfactorily addressed.
For the Aroyewun administration, however, the reception of the pensioners reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue, inclusiveness and respect for the elderly, while demonstrating that even in the Chairman’s absence, the machinery of government remained open and responsive to the people.
