A non political group that serves as a catalyst for change and good governance, known as Lagos State Good Governance Volunteers Group, LGGVG, was on Wednesday staged a solidarity rally for Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode, urging the national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reconsider its alleged decision not to support the Governor’s second term bid.
The solidarity rally which was held in Ikeja, saw the supporters holding placards with different inscriptions in favour of the Governor’s second term bid, while they also noted the Governor had performed beyond expectations and turned the State around since the advent of his administration in 2015 to deserve a second term in office.
Ambode’s second term bid have increasingly come under jeopardy in recent days over alleged disagreement between him and his political godfather, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Ambode and two other aspirants Jide Sanwonolu and Obafemi Hamzat, recently picked the governorship nomination forms of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the September 29th APC primary in the State.
Sanwonolu, subsequently, last Sunday formerly declared his intention to contest for the party’s ticket, promising to restore the glory of the State and give special attention to the environment which had become a source of concern to Lagosians.
Tinubu is alleged to be in favour of Sanwo-olu replacing the Governor, there has also been intense pressure on Ambode to withdraw his nomination form in recent days ahead of the party’s primaries next week.
But speaking to MegaXpression Magazine, the Convener of the group, Afeez Odesanya, said that the Governor had performed excellently well since assuming office especially in the education sector and the provision of infrastructures across the State.
Odesanya stressed that the Governor was being persecuted wrongly for running a prudent and people-centred administration, that had refused to be hijacked by certain individuals in the State, stressing that the Governor deserved a second term ticket in office.
“Go round the State and see the infrastructures, the roads and other projects. What is happening now is because he has refused to bend for some people who want to control his government.
“We are appealing to the National leader of our great party, other party leaders, civil servants, Cooperate organisations and general public, to please reconsider their decision and support the governor; mistakes are bound to happen, and that is why provision is made for it in the dictionary,” Odesanya said.
Also speaking to us was one of the principal coordinators, Kazeem Shobowale (DMI), who revealed to to MegaXpression Magazine that the rally is a lobby protest to appeal to Asiwaju Tinubu and the GAC members to tempered justice with mercy.
"It's a tradition, for equity and justice, Ambode should be allowed for second term, as Tinubu allowed the 18 council chairmen to go for their second term in office," DMI said.
"It's 72 hour lobby protest, one has done in Epe yesterday, Ikeja today and Badagry division tomorrow," he explained.
