The indigenes of Ikorodu Division in Lagos State have shown total rejection to a proposed bill in the Lagos State House of Assembly, seeking to cede Shomolu and Kosofe local governments to Ikorodu Division, stating that Ikorodu Division is composed of towns and communities who speaks Ijebu language and has have cultural and historical relationship even before the creation of Lagos State.
Speaking at the Stakeholders Meeting, held at Ikorodu Town Hall on Sunday, representatives across the Division rejected the Bill, which has passed both the first and second reading on the floor of the House.
The gathering, named Ikorodu Division People’s Forum, agreed to meet the Royal fathers, political and community leaders across Ikorodu Division and come up with a communique to be sent to the State Governor, Assembly and other appropriate quarters.
The stakeholders commended the position of the Majority Leader, Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon SOB Agunbiade, for opposing the bill in totality, and the IKODASS Chairman, Otunba Ganiu Olusegun Abiru, who called the stakeholders meeting and brought the bill to the attention of Ikorodu people.
Hon. SOB Agunbiade and his counterpart from Ikorodu constituency II, Hon Nurudeen Sholaja-Saka, were both assured the people of Ikorodu Division in their remarks to work together and ensure that the Bill is rejected.
Speaking at the event, former State Cabinet member, Mr F.O. Lasisi, eloquently said Shomolu and Kosofe shared no cultural affinity with Ikorodu Division, noting that the status quo should be maintained.
In the same vein, Barrister SOK Shillings said the Bill is politically motivated, stating that it's an insult to the indigenes of Ikorodu Division and should be withdrawn immediately.
Also in attendance are former Chairman, Local Government Civil Service Commission, Mr Babatunde Rotinwa, Vice Chairman Ikorodu LG, Princess Folashade Olabanji-Oba, the Anchor man and Senior Lecturer from LASU, Dr. Abiodun Fatai-Abatan and the Agbaakin of Ikorodu Kingdom, Otunba Ayodele Elesho.
Others are Mr Babatunde Afuwape, Comrade Kehinde Okeowo, Alhaji Musbaudeen Alejo, Mr Shakiru Seidu, Mr Kazeem Showemimo DMI, Alhaji Sulaimon Pelaiye, Mr Oluwakemi Hassan Bashexy, Students Union from the Six local councils in Ikorodu Division, youths representatives, amongst others.
