AROYEWUN THROWS WEIGHT BEHIND NYCN'S "BACK TO STREET" INITIATIVE, PLEDGES SUPPORT FOR GRASSROOTS YOUTH OUTREACH.
The Executive Chairman of Igbogbo/Baiyeku Local Council Development Area (IBLCDA), Omo’ba Hammed Olalekan Aroyewun, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to youth development, community safety, and inclusive governance as he hosted the leadership of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Lagos State Chapter, on an official courtesy visit.
The delegation, led by the Lagos State Chairman of NYCN, Engr. Adigun Ibrahim Olalekan (MNSE), formally introduced the Council’s “Back to Street” initiative, an intervention programme designed to drive grassroots engagement and address critical social challenges affecting young people across communities. The initiative, which is being flagged off in Ikorodu Division, focuses on three key areas: anti-cultism advocacy, drug abuse prevention, and the promotion of civic responsibility and political participation among youths.
Speaking during the visit, Engr. Adigun emphasised the urgency of taking proactive steps to reconnect with young people at the grassroots, noting that sustained engagement is essential to curbing social vices and fostering responsible citizenship. He also drew attention to recent security concerns within the community and appealed for stronger collaboration between youth bodies and security agencies, particularly through existing local security platforms.
In his response, Chairman Aroyewun commended the NYCN leadership for its foresight and commitment to youth-focused interventions, describing the “Back to Street” initiative as timely and impactful. He assured the delegation of the LCDA’s full support in driving the programme, particularly in areas of community mobilisation, stakeholder engagement, and institutional collaboration.
The Chairman further stressed the importance of unity within youth organisations, cautioning against internal divisions that could undermine their effectiveness. He urged the NYCN to remain focused on its core mandate of advocacy, development, and service to the community.
“Our youths are central to the future of this LCDA. Any initiative that seeks to positively engage them, redirect their energy, and empower them to contribute meaningfully to society will always have our full backing,” Aroyewun stated.
“Unity is your strength,” he added. “Stay focused, stay aligned, and keep your eyes on the impact you seek to make in the lives of young people.”
He also acknowledged the critical role young people played in the emergence and continued progress of his administration, reaffirming his commitment to sustaining policies and programmes that prioritise youth inclusion and empowerment.
The Chairman further emphasised his administration’s commitment to youth inclusion in governance, pointing to the deliberate integration of young professionals and leaders within his cabinet structure.
Demonstrating his dedication to youth engagement, the Chairman disclosed that he ensured his presence at the meeting despite health challenges the previous night, underscoring the importance he places on collaboration with youth stakeholders.
The NYCN leadership, in turn, expressed appreciation for the Chairman’s openness and demonstrated support, pledging to work closely with the LCDA to ensure the successful implementation of the “Back to Street” initiative.
The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their shared commitment to building a safer, more engaged, and forward-looking community through sustained youth participation and strategic collaboration.
