Hundreds of traders, artisans, market women, and small-scale entrepreneurs across Ikorodu Federal Constituency have started benefiting from a fresh round of economic empowerment as Rep. Babajimi Adegoke Benson MHR, reintroduced his annual business grant initiative aimed at supporting grassroots businesses and improving local economic activities.
The empowerment programme, which officially commenced on Monday, May 25, 2026, at the constituency office of the federal lawmaker in Ikorodu, is expected to inject no less than ₦30 million into grassroots businesses, with about 600 beneficiaries selected to receive financial grants aimed at strengthening and sustaining their various enterprises.Rep. The initiative has continued to attract commendations from residents, community stakeholders, and beneficiaries who described the intervention as timely and impactful, particularly at a period when many small-scale entrepreneurs are battling economic difficulties and rising business costs.
Representing Rep. Benson at the flag-off ceremony was Mayor Deen Sanwoola, Director-General of the iCare Foundation and Executive Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on LASPA, who supervised the symbolic commencement of the disbursement exercise.
Although only a few beneficiaries were physically present during the opening ceremony, the grant distribution process began immediately afterward and is scheduled for completion on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.
Speaking during the exercise, Mayor Sanwoola noted that the initiative forms part of Rep. Benson’s consistent grassroots intervention programmes designed to support small business owners, empower vulnerable entrepreneurs, and stimulate local economic growth within Ikorodu Federal Constituency.
He explained that despite a temporary pause in the programme last year, the lawmaker remained committed to reviving the initiative because of his strong belief in economic inclusion and direct empowerment of ordinary citizens.
Mayor Sanwoola further linked the intervention to the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that the business support scheme reflects ongoing efforts aimed at ensuring that government-inspired relief initiatives positively impact people at the grassroots level.
According to him, Rep. Benson believes that effective representation should go beyond policymaking to include practical interventions capable of improving livelihoods and supporting families whose survival depends on daily trading and small-scale businesses.
He also appreciated President Tinubu for prioritising economic recovery and citizen-focused programmes while encouraging beneficiaries to make productive use of the grants towards business expansion, restocking, and financial stability.
Many beneficiaries expressed excitement and gratitude during the exercise, describing the intervention as a major relief capable of reviving struggling businesses, boosting trading activities, and easing financial pressures.
Some traders who spoke during the programme commended Rep. Benson for sustaining people-oriented empowerment initiatives that continue to cut across various market clusters, artisan groups, and community associations within Ikorodu Division.
Party leaders, supporters, and community stakeholders who monitored the exercise equally applauded the transparent coordination and orderly disbursement process put in place for beneficiaries.
Over the years, Rep. Babajimi Benson, through the iCare Foundation, has facilitated numerous developmental and empowerment initiatives spanning education, healthcare, youth development, food support programmes, infrastructure projects, and direct economic assistance schemes across Ikorodu Division.
Observers and residents noted that the return of the annual business grant initiative once again reinforces the lawmaker’s reputation for prioritising grassroots development, poverty alleviation, and inclusive economic growth within the constituency.
