Community Development Committee, CDC, Imota LCDA, have proffered solutions to the lingering security challenges in Ikorodu Division at a consultative leadership training held at Admos Hotel and Suites, in Imota, Lagos.
The CDC Chairman, Imota LCDA, Comrade Odumosu Rafiu Abiodun Ashaka, in his welcome address, advocated fair representation of zones in government and CDAs' involvement on security, as a panacea to lasting peace and unity in Ikorodu Division.
Speaking at the training, Mr Waheed Ishola, Director National Orientation Agency, Lagos State, said that the training was a right step in the right direction, adding that, “no Nation can make progress in an atmosphere of chaos’’.
"Without doubt, the theme of this gathering is not only timely but appropriate, in view of the myriads of security challenges that our Nation and its people have had to contend with in recent times. Despite series of security measures by the Federal Government through various policy measures to stem the tide of insecurity in our various communities, our dear Nation had been severally threatened by long term neglect and loss of family values due to parental negligence," Ishola opined.
"The hitherto harmonious Child to Parent relationship is increasingly becoming difficult due to globalization, technology and social media influence. These have led to the proliferation of uncensored information that has permeated our households.
"Most often, parents and communities blame government at all levels for the failure of living up to responsibilities; yet, we forgot that children exposed to abuse and neglect are at increased risk of inflicting pain on others and developing aggressive and violent behaviours.
"When we expose children to strange, violent and uncensored online movies, unrestricted access to the use of the internet and social media platforms, we endanger their future and expose them to realities far beyond their age.
"Technology is breaking down family communication and values. Parents have refused to spend quality time with their children due to social media addiction. This robs families of attention, social interaction and bonding.
"Parents, guardians and caregivers must rise up to the responsibilities of parenthood. Children are clays in the hands of their parents. They can be moulded to whatever shape and structures we so desire. We must therefore start playing the unique role of shaping our children’s future now or never," Ishola explained.
The DPO, Imota Divisional Police Station, CSP Uro Justin, in his remarks gave legal ways of employing local security and its precautions, stating that Community Policing have come to stay in Nigeria.
In the same vein, Barrister Adebisi Ogundipe, CEO/ Legal Councel, Adebisi Ogundipe & Co Legal Practitioners, stated the needs for a legal Adverser in discharging community assignment. While the HOD Agric, Imota LCDA, Mr Oluwatitomi Bakare, explained the importance of a community.
In all, they urged the Community Leaders and citizens to engage in over-sighting and Security as a form of citizens’ participation in communal activities, where citizens constantly review government activities towards ensuring a secured and peaceful environment.
These over-sighting activities were said, not to criticize or condemn the existing government security institutions, but to improve upon their operational performances, noting that it's a proactive activity, aimed at provision of equipment and adequate funding for security operatives at all levels. It'll also give room for reporting and monitoring of performance on conduct of officers as they perform their duties within the assigned communities.
The CDAs were later urged to take disciplinary actions against negative activities within their communities, and demonstrate high level of trust worthiness and transparency.
Also to have respect for government and governmental institutions/ infrastructures provided for the people, encouragement of well-meaning individuals to build barracks, Police posts and purchase of other essential security equipment.
