AROYEWUN'S MENTORSHIP INITIATIVE: JIMI BENSON, MERANDA, OBASA INSPIRE YOUTH TO LEAD WITH CHARACTER, COMPETENCE AND PURPOSE


The second edition of the Mentorship Session with HOA 2.0, hosted by the Executive Chairman of Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA, Omo’ba Hammed Aroyewun, has challenged young people to embrace purposeful leadership, build strong character and develop the competence required to transform their communities.

Held under the theme, “Leading with Purpose: Mentoring the Next Generation of Transformational Leaders,” the programme brought together accomplished leaders, professionals and young mentees for an engaging exchange of knowledge, experience and practical wisdom.

Aroyewun, in his address, described the initiative as an investment in people and a deliberate effort to prepare young minds for the responsibilities of tomorrow, stressing that leadership must be built on character, competence, integrity, courage and service.

He urged the youths not to wait for titles before making an impact, but to begin by identifying problems and creating solutions wherever they find themselves.

Delivering the keynote address, the Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, reinforced the message, urging the participants to look beyond the pursuit of positions and ask themselves: “What problem am I prepared to solve?”

She described mentorship as the transfer of experience, values, perspective and opportunities from one generation to another, while charging the youths to remain teachable, protect their integrity, continuously improve their competence and adapt to the rapidly changing world.

Using leadership as a relay race, Meranda stressed that every leader holds the baton only for a season and must prepare the next generation to carry it further.

“If your leadership ends with you, you built a position. If your leadership produces people who can lead beyond you, you built a legacy.”

Also speaking, the Member representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency, Rep. Babajimi Adegoke Benson, shared inspiring stories of hope and encouraged the young participants to remain focused on their aspirations. He tasked HOA memtorship 2.0 to ensure that youths are supported in registering and formalising their businesses and assured them of his continued assistance.

The mentorship session featured a distinguished panel comprising Dr. Muritala Seriki, Damilare Orimoloye, Dr. Adeleke Dankuwo, Vinod Obasa, Tolulope Faniyi, Hon. Jesica Enitan Oba and Opeyemi Seidu, who shared valuable experiences and practical insights with the participants. MOOH moderated the panel session, while Hafsoh Ogunbiyi anchored the event.

The programme ultimately underscored a shared conviction among the speakers: the future belongs to young people who combine ambition with preparation, character, competence and purpose.
Through HOA 2.0, the Aroyewun administration is not merely talking about the future—it is deliberately investing in the people who will lead it, with the vision of producing a generation whose impact will extend beyond their positions and create a lasting legacy for Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA, Lagos State and Nigeria.
