ABIKE DABIRI-EREWA HONORED, GETS ROYAL AWARD BY AYANGBUREN OF IKORODU. | Shakiru Seidu. ...She has been lifting the Standard of Ikorodu Kingdom, Oba Kabir Shotobi reveals.

The Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Kafayat Dabiri-Erewa (Nee Erogbogbo), has been honoured with Award by the Ayangburen of Ikorodu Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Oba (Engr.) Kabir Adewale Shotobi, for lifting the standard of Ikorodu, Lagos State and Nigeria, as a good Ambassador.

The former lawmaker, who had being a major player in the President Buhari led Administration was described by the Ayangburen as “the true face of Ikorodu Kingdom,” and promised to continue to support her morally in her pursuits.

Hon. Dabiri-Erewa, while speaking with MegaXpression Media, appreciated the King and the entire people of Ikorodu Kingdom for the recognition, urging all to love one another and adhere to the doctrine of peaceful co-existence, as this would make Lagos and Nigeria in particular habitable.

The former Lawmaker further said that the Ikorodu Oga Day Celebration which was aimed at bringing its people together for common purpose should equally be used to enhance the growth and development of Ikorodu kingdom.

Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, born to the family of Alhaji and Alhaja Ashafa Erogbogbo of Ikorodu, while her father, Alhaji Ashafa Erogbogbo is one of the children of late Alh. Sule Erogbogbo of Adegorunsen Compound, Ajina Square, Ita- Agbodo, Ikorodu. Also her paternal grandmother, Alhaja Alimotu Erobogbo is from Bello Solebo family of Ita- Elewa Square, Ikorodu.

She started her educational career at the Maryland Convent private school, Ikeja. For her secondary education, she attended St. Teresa’s College, Ibadan. Thereafter, she attended the prestigious University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU) Ile-Ife, where she obtained a degree in English Language. 

She continued her quest for knowledge at the University of Lagos, Akoka from where she obtained a post graduate Diploma (PGD) in Mass Communication and also a Master’s Degree in Mass Communication. She is an alumnus of the School of Government, Harvard University, USA.

Famous nationwide as an outstanding media practitioner, Abike Dabiri fondly called “Mother of Teresa of the tube” spent 15 years of distinguished and meritorious service at the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA). She voluntarily disengaged from NTA to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives, where she won a landmark victory and represented the people of Ikorodu Federal Constituency for 12 years.

Despite being a member of a minority party then, she was appointed as the Pioneer Chairman of the House Committee on Media & Publicity of the House of Representatives during which she gave the house a strong, positive voice and working with the Leadership operated an open door media policy, where she initiated a programme tagged “We serve you”.

Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa got re-elected for a second term, and in 2009, she was made the Chairman of the newly constituted House Committee on Diaspora Affairs, a new Committee with the challenge of ensuring that Nigerians in Diaspora are integrated into the development and activities of their motherland. She was able to put Diaspora issues on the front burner and ensured it got into the national consciousness and today,  Nigeria has a Commission solely for Nigerians in the Diaspora; Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM).

She served as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora from 2016- 2019, and was later appointed the Pioneer Chairman/CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, a position she is serving presently with diligence, effectiveness and passion.

Other industrious Sons of Ikorodu, who were equally honored by the Ayangburen of Ikorodu were Prince Chief Adewale Anifowose Onabanjo, Mr Fatai Oluwole and Basorun Babatunde Rotinwa.

Mr Shakiru Sanni was on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, removed from his position as the Olumale Eluku of Igbogbo Kingdom, after his alleged gross misconduct and disrespect to the Adeboruwa of Igbogbo Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Oba Semiudeen Orimadegun Kasali and traditional institution of Igbogboland.
